Frequently Asked Questions

  • One run through (proof, line or developmental) takes an average of 2 weeks depending of the length of your manuscript and work needed. While I do take simultaneous projects, I may need to wait to fit you into my schedule (generally no longer than 4 weeks) so please take this into account when booking. If you need something started quickly, get in touch and I will do my best to accommodate your timeframe.

  • If this is your first or second draft, you will need a developmental edit to review the structure, plotting and scenes within your novel.

If you are a few drafts in, you will need a line edit, to ensure the word choice, flow and logic of your writing is consistent in style and accessible for the reader/agent.

If your manuscript has been through an editor already and you are close to publication, you will need a proofread to ensure no typos or errors make it into print.

  • I can take payment through PayPal, bank transfer or cash if we meet in person. I usually take a deposit before project and the rest of the payment upon delivery of manuscript after one editorial read through. This can be paid in instalments in preferable.

  • I am based in Glasgow, and am happy to attend in-person meetings in the central belt of Scotland. Otherwise, video calls and phone calls can be arranged.

  • I provide contracts to all of my clients to ensure you retain full copyright of your work. I work with full confidentiality, and share none of my clients’ work or details with external people or organisations. I will delete your manuscript six months after completion of contract.

  • If you have a manuscript written and you wish to share it, whether that be to traditional publishers (via literary agents), indie publishers or go down the self-publishing route, it is always best practice to have an editor look over your work first. An editor can assess your project from an external perspective and break down some of those barriers that agents, publishers or readers might encounter upon purchasing/reading your book. This means your book has the maximum amount of success possible upon hitting the market and allows you as an author to enter the literary world with a polished product you can be proud of.

If you intend to publish your work with a publisher, it is likely to go through further editorial processes there. My work will increase the chances (but cannot guarantee) of publishers seeing the value in your work and taking it to their own internal editors for publication. They will then refine the manuscript for the audience they intend to sell it to and for the style guide that they traditionally work from.
